Understanding: Adobe Commerce Product Setup

This article explains how products are defined in Adobe Commerce.
Those products can be used in the Grow Adobe Commerce Product Quiz.

Adobe Commerce product configuration elements

When you add products to Adobe Commerce, you choose an attribute set containing attributes.
You can also assign products to categories to group them, and work with variants.

Attribute Set

An attribute set is a template that defines which attributes a product will have.
When you create a new product, you choose an attribute set, and it determines which fields appear (for example: color, size, material, brand).

Examples:
- Attribute set: Apparel
>> Includes attributes like: Color, Size, Material, Fit, Gender

- Attribute set: Electronics
>> Includes attributes like: Brand, Model, Warranty, Screen Size

So, if you create a T-shirt product, you'd select the Apparel attribute set.
If you create a Laptop, you'd select Electronics.

Note: You can find more info on attribute sets in the Adobe Commerce knowledgebase.

Attributes

Attributes are individual pieces of product data (characteristics).
They describe a product and can be used for filtering, searching, or display.
You can create custom attributes, such as Size, Color, Material, Fit, Gender.

Examples of attributes (for a T-shirt):
Color: White, Black, Blue
Size: Small, Medium, Large
Material: Cotton, Polyester
Fit: Regular, Slim
Gender: Men, Women, Unisex

There are also system attributes, which can't be changed, such as Name, SKU, Price, Weight, Quantity.

Note: You can find more info on attributes in the Adobe Commerce knowledgebase.

Categories

Categories organize your products into a hierarchy on your storefront.
They help shoppers browse and find items easily.

Examples category tree:
Men → Tops → T-Shirts
Men → Bottoms → Jeans
Women → Tops → Blouses

A product could be assigned to: Men → Tops → T-Shirts.
The same T-shirt might also appear under a Sale category (as you can assign a product to zero, one, or multiple categories).

Note: You can find more info on categories in the Adobe Commerce knowledgebase.

Variants

Variants let you offer the same product in multiple options, like colors or sizes.
In Adobe Commerce, this is usually done using a Configurable Product that links to multiple Simple Products (each representing a variant).

Examples:
Configurable Product: Cotton T-Shirt
Variants (Simple Products):
White / Small
White / Medium
White / Large
Black / Small
Black / Medium
Black / Large

Each variant can have its own SKU, stock and price, but they're all part of one configurable product.
